His transition to professional photography, especially in architecture, heritage, and territory, marked a significant contribution to the field, showcasing Portuguese architecture internationally through collaborations with prominent architects like Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto de Moura.
Alves work, celebrated for its ability to disseminate Portuguese architectural marvels globally, led to his recognition as a pioneer in architectural photography in Portugal. His collaboration extended to many architects, influencing the visual documentation of architecture. His contributions were acknowledged with honors like the title of Honorary Member of the Order of Architects in 2013, the Municipal Medal of Merit - Gold Grade by Porto City Council in 2015, and the Cultural Merit Medal in 2021.
His personal archive, a treasure of over 178,000 images, was donated to Casa de Arquitectura in 2021, ensuring his legacy lives on for research and inspiration.
