LFA Prize 2025: Finalists announced in a competition that unites 99 countries through architectural photography
The 10 finalist projects for the 2025 edition of the Luis Ferreira Alves International Photography Award were announced today, an initiative that has established itself as one of the main international platforms for valorising architectural photography.
The Jury for this edition faced a particularly demanding challenge due to the exceptional quality and diversity of the 1,495 applications received from 99 countries. The 10 finalists' photographic series were selected and honoured for their technical excellence, creativity, artistic maturity and critical view of the discipline of architecture.
The announcement of the Winners - 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prizes - will be made on 28 June (Saturday) at 4pm at Casa da Arquitectura in Matosinhos, during a public ceremony marked by the projection of the winning photographic series, institutional interventions and a meeting/conversation with the members of the competition jury made up of architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, photographers Hélène Binet and Paulo Catrica.
The event will have a hybrid format, with the physical presence of guests and live transmission via Zoom, in order to allow international monitoring, and will include the projection of the finalist series, critical comments from the Jury and a meeting with its members.
The Jury may also exceptionally award Special Mentions to projects which, although not formally finalists, have demonstrated high artistic and conceptual quality. These awards, provided for in the regulations, will be revealed exclusively through an online gallery on the Prize's official website and shared on social media, and will not be part of the physical exhibition or printed catalogue.
With this approach, the Prize reinforces its commitment to highlighting new voices and perspectives in the field of architectural photography, while maintaining the integrity and rigour of the selection process.
ABOUT THE DELIBERATION PROCESS
The Luis Ferreira Alves Photography Award received around 1,500 entries, and the Jury, unaware of the authors' identity, evaluated each project solely on its artistic and conceptual merits. The rules set out in the award regulations were carefully respected. The absence of women among the 10 finalists (a fact that we also regret) is the result of pure chance, of a combination of factors such as statistical imbalance, specific profile of the candidates and high competitiveness of the process.
The final selection reflects a diverse and inclusive understanding of architectural photography - encompassing political, social, artistic and cultural dimensions - and includes various visual languages and conceptual approaches.
We sincerely thank everyone who participated and engaged critically and constructively in the process. Through these exchanges, we can build a stronger, more inclusive and representative platform for architectural photography.
